When I was on assignment in Houston, our team would venture out to the many various places around town for lunch. One of the most memorable was Treebeards in the old Market Square district. Since they “don’t take American Express”, Treebeards was once featured in a television advertisment for VISA.

Treebeards was founded by a young couple in March of 1978 at the site of an old pool hall on Preston Street in the Market Square district of old downtown Houston. In June of 1980, they moved around the corner to their present location on Travis Street. They have since grown to a total of 5 stores, all in the downtown area.

Stevarino says:

Treebeards is strictly a lunch place, open from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM on week days. Since most of the patrons work downtown, parking is not a problem with reserved parking adjacent to the building as well as across the street. As you walk in the door, you will notice a lengthy queue winding towards the cafeteria style serving line where you will pay for your food, then seek a table. The place is always busy, especially by noon, but the turnaround is quick so you won’t have to wait too long.

A plethora of Southern favorites like Shrimp Étouffée, Duck Gumbo, Jambalaya and an assortment of daily specials come to life as you move through the line. The Jalapeño Cornbread is highly recommended by this guy as well as the Red Beans and Rice.

The atmosphere is busy with a look and feel as casual as the structure itself. Constructed at the onset of the Civil War, the Baker-Travis Building is the second oldest structure in Houston.

Ultimately, you can’t beat the price for such delicious food served in such generous portions. Treebeards is a Houston tradition!
